Support classes
At Punchbowl Public School, there two support classes for students with autism and/or intellectual disabilities, that are part of the mainstream school. There is also an Early Intervention program for preschool aged children with additional needs. Each class has a specialised teacher and SLSO supporting the learning program.
Our mainstream support classes accommodate 7 student placements. These classes are designed to support students with a primary diagnosis of autism and/or an intellectual disability, providing a nurturing and inclusive learning environment. For more information, you can visit the departmental information page here: Support Classes
Early Intervention Support classes run as two and a half hour sessions, twice a week. We have two classes on Monday-Tuesday and two classes on Thursday-Friday. Early Intervention resource support is provided Wednesdays on-site or within a child’s regular childcare, preschool or playgroup. These classes will have a maximum of eight children. For more information, you can visit the departmental information page here: Early intervention (nsw.gov.au)
Both these specialised programs provide a welcoming and inclusive environment, helping students to develop academically, socially, and emotionally alongside their peers. The school collaborates closely with families and staff to ensure every student receives the tailored support and resources they need to reach their full potential.
How to enrol
Enrolment into support classes is different from enrolling in mainstream public schools. It involves a referral and placement process. If you believe these classes may be the right setting for your child, your local school is the first place to start. They will work with you to understand your child’s needs and help you explore the right support options available.
- Find your local school: you can use School Finder to locate your local public school.
- Discuss support pathways: talk to your local school about available support pathways for your child.
Enrolment is considered when:
- your child has significant and ongoing support needs
- they meet the department’s disability criteria
- this type of specialist support is the most appropriate.
For placement in the hub, your child's current school must submit an application called an access request This is done in consultation with the family. A local placement panel then reviews the application and makes a recommendation.
