Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.

PBL - Positive Behaviour for Learning
At our school, we use Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) – a whole-school approach for creating a positive, safe and supportive school climate where students can learn and develop.
Positive Behaviour for Learning brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture.
Students and staff benefit from:
- reduced problem behaviour
- increased time focused on instruction
- improved social-emotional wellbeing
- positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
- support for teachers to teach, model and respond effectively to student need
- a predictable learning environment where staff and students know what is expected to deliver effective practices that can be sustained over time
PAX - Good Behaviour Game
PAX means peace, productivity, health and happiness, and is what the PAX Good Behaviour Game helps create and strengthen in each classroom.
PAX GBG consists of proven behavioural strategies used daily by teachers with students. The ‘peaceful’ classroom environment supports learning, wellbeing, participation and confidence.
Schools using PAX GBG report:
- Increased time for teaching and learning
- Increased attention to and completion of academic tasks
- Engaged learners
- Improved learning outcomes including reading scores
- Reduction in off-task and disruptive behaviours.
Green Team
The Green Team initiative, that caters for students K-6 with a particular interest in the environment and sustainability.
The Green Team program consistently supports students to make sustainable change in their school by providing opportunities to develop student agency and voice. Student voice is amplified through Green Team meetings, rosters, planning and facilitation of student led experiences.
Students regularly advocate and celebrate their contributions by writing content to be shared in the newsletter and social media, which further demonstrates student advocacy.
Student Voice
Student voice is a valued and integral part of our school community. Through programs like the School Representative Council (SRC) and the Peacekeepers initiative, students are empowered to actively participate in shaping their school environment.
The SRC provides students with a platform to discuss important issues, organise school events, and represent their peers’ perspectives.
The Peacekeepers program trains Stage 3 students in conflict resolution, mediation, and cooperative play. This initiative fosters essential skills that help students manage playground interactions positively and supports a respectful and inclusive school culture.
Our daily radio show connects all classrooms, featuring student-led announcements, reminders for school events, and reinforcing our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) focus each week.
Wellbeing and Health In-reach Nurse (WHIN)
Our school proudly hosts a Wellbeing Nurse employed by NSW Health. Wellbeing Nurses are co-located in some public schools to enhance student health and wellbeing.
At Punchbowl Public School, our Wellbeing Nurse works closely with the school’s Learning Support Team, as well as local health and social services.
Together, they provide coordinated support to students and families on a wide range of health and wellbeing matters, including mental health, physical health, behaviour, social skills, and peer or family relationships.
National Student Wellbeing Program
Punchbowl Public School proudly participates in the National Student Wellbeing Program, which supports the wellbeing and engagement of students through pastoral care and wellbeing initiatives. The program aims to enhance the social, emotional and spiritual development of students while fostering a safe, inclusive and caring school environment.
Our Student Wellbeing Officer provides one-on-one and small group support, helping students build resilience, develop positive relationships and strengthen self-esteem. The officer also works closely with the Learning Support Team and classroom teachers to promote strategies that improve student engagement and overall wellbeing.
Through the National Student Wellbeing Program our school continues to nurture a culture where every student feels valued, supported and empowered to thrive.
