NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC)

Some changes have been made to the PRC to allow students to complete the challenge in 2020 despite the difficulties with CoVID19. These changes include:

·         Students are able to read TEN choice books, in previous years it was limited to five.

·         Students are able to include books on their reading record that they read as a class online, with their teacher, at home with a parent/ carer or on their own.

For a complete list of the changes click on this link. Challenge rules

The table below outlines the number of books students are expected to read so they can complete the PRC for 2020 and gain a certificate.

An Innovative Learning Environment

The Punchbowl School Library offers an Innovative Learning Environment where students can thrive. The library space is undergoing a complete transformation which aims to empower our students with important skills for learning success now and well into their future. Our Library program offers students the opportunity to borrow from a wide selection of books to build on their literacy skills; including digital literacy. Students engage in collaborative online learning through Google Classrooms.

A fortnightly STEAM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) is also on offer in the library learning hub.  The STEAM program focusses on introducing students to the basics of Coding but not limited to that. Our students have explored learning with Virtual Reality and Makey Makey. 3D Design and Printing is a favourite among our stage 3 students while Bluebots offer an exciting introduction to program for our Stage 1 and Early Stage 1 cohort.

Through these programs we aim to equip our students with essential skills such as creative and critical thinking, along with communication and collaboration which will serve them well as they embark on their journeys toward lifelong learning. Persistence and resilience, often forgotten but essential qualities, are also being developed and strengthened as our students learn that things don’t always work on the first attempt. Through their varied and challenging learning experiences in our library students quickly understand that ‘grit’ and a growth mindset are much needed companions for success in and outside the classroom.
