Learning from home

Learning from home

Additional time at home is a great opportunity for families to engage in fun learning activities with their little ones. To assist families of babies and preschoolers the Department of Education has put together a list of online educational resources for children aged 0-5 years.

Learning at home is different to learning at preschool. It’s helpful to maintain a connection with your preschool and educators if you can as they are able to provide additional advice and support.

Learning at home should be fun and include play-based activities that are child-led and build on other everyday activities. This resource sheet will show you how to create opportunities for play-based learning in your home.

This kind of learning helps your child be ready for school by:

  • Encouraging play-based learning
  • Building autonomous learners
  • Developing numeracy and literacy skills
  • Engaging the imagination and encouraging child-led learning experiences
  • Developing fine and gross motor skills
  • Building upon the interests of children
  • Encouraging discussion between the child and family members
  • Sustaining cultural knowledge and understanding
  • Promoting healthy living practices and general wellbeing
  • Supporting the needs of children with disability
  • Supporting families where English is not their first language

Provide support for your children by:

  • Maintaining healthy eating routines
  • Establishing routines and expectations
  • Defining a space for your child/children to play in
  • Beginning and ending each day with a check-in
  • Taking an active role in helping your child engage in play-based activities
  • Encouraging physical activity and/or exercise
  • Checking in with your child/children regularly to help them manage stress
  • Monitoring how much time your child is spending online and making sure there is a balance between indoor and outdoor play where possible
