Co-curricular

Co-curricular programs

At Punchbowl Public School, we are committed to excellence in teaching, learning, and student wellbeing. As a leading provider of public education from Kindergarten to Year 6, we pride ourselves on delivering outstanding academic outcomes for every child.

We actively implement research-based programs in literacy, numeracy and wellbeing to ensure all students reach their full potential. Our expert teaching team is dedicated to providing high-quality, targeted learning experiences in a nurturing environment where every child feels known, valued and cared for.

Our preschool has been rated as exceeding the National Quality Standards, setting the foundation for confident and capable learners. Through play-based and inquiry-driven learning, our preschoolers build a strong foundation for future success, fostering curiosity, creativity and a love for learning.

Chess Club

All students from Stages 2 and 3 may attend our weekly Chess Club. Students receive expert tuition through lessons delivered by coaches from Sydney Academy of Chess (SAoC). Each year, we hold two tournaments (home and away) against our friendly local rivals, Wiley Park Public School. Our most accomplished players also participate in SAoC Interschool Chess Challenge tournaments.  Junior Dance (K-2) and Senior Dance (3-6) groups practice weekly.  Dancers of varying experience levels enjoy the challenge of learning choreography and improving their skills.  Our dance groups perform annually at the Combined Public Schools Music Festival held in Term 3 at Bankstown Sports Club.

Choir

Our Senior Choir allows students in Years 3-6 to learn to sing a wide repetoire of songs, culminating in their performance as part of the multi-school choir at the Combined Pubic Schools Music Festival.  Students develop their understanding of pitch and rhythm, including the ability to sing in parts.  OUr choir also perform at key school events, including our end-of-year Presentation Day assemblies.

Maths Olympiad

The Maths Olympiad program engages our most advanced mathematicians in more demanding problem-solving.  Explicit teaching allows these students in Stage 3 ( and sometimes Year 4) to work together in building strategies and skills to answer perplexing questions.  All students individually complete four 30-minute tests comprising five challenging questions.  Answers are then discussed and approaches compared.

Public Speaking

Students develope their capacity to speak publicly in front of others through delivering prepared speeches in class.  The best speeches earn their speaker the right to compete against representatives from other classes in their grade.  The best of these speakers are then able to present Punchbowl Pubic School in regional events such as the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition.

Debating

Debating is offered to students in Stage 3 as a lunchtime extracurricular activity.  Teams of four then represent our school in interschool debates.  Topics allow students to practice explaining their ideas clearly, whilst the need to rebut their opponents calls for quick thinking in identifying weaknesses in arguments presented.
